A Michigan police officer who believed he was responding to a possible suicide was killed when a gunman began shooting through a locked bedroom door, beginning a lengthy and ongoing shoot out with police. SWAT teams have assembled outside the home in West Bloomfield Township, Mich., and neighbors have been evacuated as helicopters fly overhead. Police have sent robots towards the home, but the gunman has opened fire on the machines, police said. Authorities said they believe the suspect is a 50-year-old man named Rick Coley. Officer Patrick O'Rourke, 39, a 12-year veteran of the force and a married father of four, was killed Sunday night around 10 p.m. when officers arrived at the home responding to a 911 call that a shot had been fired. Family members inside the home heard the shot, left them home and called 911. O'Rourke and four other officers entered the home and attempted to locate the suspect, who locked himself in an upstairs bedroom, Police Lt. Timothy Diamond told ABCNews.com. The responding officers thought that the gunman had possibly committed suicide inside the room. After knocking on the door, "The suspect started firing shots through the door and drywall," Diamond said, O'Rourke was struck in the neck and killed. Two other officers received minor injuries. The family members who called police had left the home before the cops arrived, Diamond said. The West Bloomfield School District alerted parents via phone calls and text messages that schools were opened, though school bus service was suspended near the scene.
